Lavan Wright, Graphic Artist

When did you begin to draw your works?
I started drawing as early as kindergarten such as doodling mega zords and to stick figures of my family, started branching out to cartoons in second grade.

What art school did you attend?
I attended the Art and Design High School in Manhattan. My talents are mostly self-taught but with the exception of some lessons learned from other schools.

Which medium do you prefer?
I enjoy all mediums. I mostly preferred to use pencil, and it's the most flexible and easily accessible.

What's your favorite item which brings inspiration to you?
I like to take inspiration from everything but my favorite source is cartoons. I'm a big kid at heart.

Are you a day or night artist?
I'm an everyday all day artist and I draw all the time and anytime.

MORE

I visited the Jewish Museum for the two exhibits, Houdini: Art and Magic, and Shifting the Gaze.

I learned Houdini use to be a locksmith's assistant,
so maybe that explains why he was so good at escaping locks!

I enjoyed viewing the Painting & Feminism's art series.
My favorite was the Venus Pareve (1982-84) by Hannah Wilke.

ACP Event at Zürcher Studio Dec 10

Photobucket

Last Wednesday, night I attended the Artlog's ACP members gathered at Zürcher Studio on the Lower East Side for a private holiday party with young patrons from the Museum of Arts and Design. Ákos Birkás' solo show had opened the previous night, and the Hungarian artist's luminous paintings dominated the space.

In an informal Q&A with Gwenolee Zürcher, Birkás described switching to figurative painting after twenty years of abstraction: "Like leaving one woman for another - difficult when you have children, abstract children." Throughout the evening, members mingled, enjoyed the open bar, and, in keeping with the holiday spirit, took home gift bags from Club Monaco.

I believe I found this red/white polka dot dress from Goodwill and then I kind of altered it with safety pins, so it could have some volume, and I bought the shoes from a Patricia Fields/Payless, and all the jewelry is vintage, I found this black hat in my house floating around and finished off by a vintage rabbit fur jacket.

HAPPY NEW YEARS from SWABYCHIC!

SWABYCHIC has some exciting plans for the 2010: fun interviews with creative matricks, interesting students, artists, events, superb videos of my trips, and discoveries. Also, we will be introducing a series of t-shirts in the Spring 2010. We will keep you posted on the details.

Here's a shoot I did with Kwame Brimpong:

We found some cool spots to shoot at an old junk car yard in South New Jersey. It was very chilly but we wanted to get these shots just right. I have a cold now probably as a result of this shoot but it was worth it!
